Women cycle power

Spring will be soon upon us and the daylight is returning. Riding to work is a great way of keeping fit and good for the environment, however men are more likely to cycle to work than women. In 2011: 3.9% of male workers cycled to work compared with 1.6% of female workers in England and Wales. How can we encourage women to cycle to work?

Not safe to ride

A female survey found that women not feeling safe was the biggest concern about cycling to work, with 67% of women choosing dedicated cycle lanes as the number one thing that will get them cycling more.

Most women need female friendly bikes: the crossbar is lowered, making it practical to cycle in a skirt or a dress. Saddles are wider at the back and narrower at the front to accommodate bone structure and handlebars are set for shorter arms and narrower shoulders.

Bike busting myths

If you’ve got a long way to travel why not put a folding bike in the car and ride a portion of the commute, avoiding traffic jams and frustration. You’ll be surprised how quickly you’re ready to increase the cycling distance each day. Here are 5 myths used to stop cycling to work.

  1. No showers at work. Just take it easy when you cycle; like walking with wheels, rather than fast paced sweaty exercise.
  2. It’s too far to cycle. Most people can cover five miles in half an hour. You’re fitting physical activity into your daily routine instead of trying to find time to exercise after work.
  3. It’s not safe. In 2014, 100 people died in cycle accidents, as opposed to 460 pedestrians killed.
  4. Poor bike condition. Simple bike maintenance videos show how to do repairs or use a local bike shop.
  5. It’s always raining. A study has shown that in an average year in the UK, if you commute every day you will get wet 7 times. Avoid cycling on the wet days using the weather apps, as they predict rain by the hour.

If you feel safe to ride, then go for it. Consider the Cycle to Work scheme if your employer has it. Perhaps the most difficult thing about cycling to work is breaking the habit of driving. Maybe it’s time to make 2018 the Year of the Bicycle.
