Young adults vaping

I am ardent anti-smoker, after witnessing my grandfather die from a smoking related cancer. You must be over 18 to buy cigarettes or any vaping paraphernalia. Often vaping is portrayed as a better alternative to cigarettes. What should you say to your children if they started vaping?

Vaping

Doctor death

Don’t smoke or vape. Every year around 78,000 people in the UK die from smoking, with many more living with smoking-related illnesses. As smoking risks serious health conditions, 3m smokers have turned to vaping. The government continues to look at the legislation as way to protect both vapers and public health.

The Law

  • You must be 18 or over to purchase e-cigarettes or e-liquids. It’s illegal for an adult to buy e-cigarettes for someone under the age of 18. There is confusion, as anyone under 18 can vape at home or in a public place.
  • There is no legal ban on vaping in public places, but it’s down to the individual businesses. Many places choose to include vaping in their no-smoking policy.
  • There is a blanket ban on vaping on public transport, including airports and stations.
  • Vaping in private car is legal, unless there is more than one person present and/or a person is under 18 years. Ensure that you are in full control of your vehicle before vaping.

Healthy…hmmm

Vaping is best used by smokers who want to break the nicotine habit. Public Heath England claims that vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking. Experts warn that vaping isn’t risk free, but it’s much less risky than smoking.

What Can Parents Do?

Make it clear to your children that you don’t approve of them vaping or using e-cigarettes. To have a sensible ant-vaping conversation:

  1. Find a good time to have an open and comfortable conversation with your child.
  2. Listen by being not only supportive, but also concerned.
  3. De-bunk the myth that vaping is a safe alternative to cigarettes.
  4. Explain that using nicotine, which is part of e-cigarettes can create health problems.
  5. The chemicals affect the brain’s reward system and continued use can lead to addiction.

There are many unknowns about vaping, including what chemicals make up the liquid. Any person regularly vaping, will be exposing themselves to chemicals that science doesn’t yet understand, increasing the probability for future health worries and problems.
